PET-OWNER GUIDE

Tips for Pet Owners

A practical checklist for a useful pharmacy quote, fewer surprises and an organized refill process.

Start with one clear quote request

Have the prescription available when speaking with the pharmacy. Ask your clinic or pharmacist to clarify unfamiliar wording rather than guessing. Share personal and prescription details through the pharmacy’s secure ordering process, not the directory.

  • Medication name and the exact named product, if specified.
  • Strength or concentration exactly as written.
  • Preparation form and route, including any release characteristics.
  • Quantity in units or total volume, rather than only a number of days.
  • Flavor, base or ingredient requirements the prescriber has specified.
  • Delivery state and any timing or temperature questions.

A “30-day supply” is not necessarily the same quantity for different prescriptions. Request the actual package size; do not calculate or change your pet’s dose to compare prices.

Compare matching quotes

Put the same specifications beside each pharmacy’s written quote. If one quote has a different concentration, form, quantity or product identity, ask for clarification. Keep it separate until the pharmacy and prescriber confirm the requested preparation. A lower package price can simply describe a different package.

Ask whether the amount is a standard one-time price. Record any coupon, new-customer, membership or subscription condition separately, including the price after the promotion. A listed starting price is a useful lead, not confirmation of the price for your prescription.

Check delivery and additional costs

  • Can this pharmacy ship this exact preparation to your address?
  • Is shipping included for this order, or does a threshold or product exclusion apply?
  • Are there preparation, handling, packaging, cold-shipping or rush fees?
  • How is tax handled, and what total will be confirmed before payment?
  • When does processing begin: order entry, prescription approval or payment?
  • Who should you contact if tracking stalls or a temperature-sensitive delivery arrives late?

Leave unquoted costs marked unknown. Do not treat free-shipping marketing as a promise for a refrigerated or otherwise restricted prescription.

Arrange refills before they become urgent

Ask the pharmacy what lead time it recommends for your specific order and whether authorization or remaining refills must be checked first. Keep its order number, contact details and instructions together. Confirm shipping dates around holidays or travel. A refill request or subscription reminder is not confirmation that a refill has been authorized.

If timing becomes difficult, contact the veterinarian and pharmacist. The directory cannot arrange a temporary treatment change.

When the medication arrives

Check the pet’s name, medication, strength, form and quantity against the confirmed order. Ask the pharmacist about discrepancies, unfamiliar directions or a different-looking preparation. FDA encourages owners to ask professionals to demonstrate any measuring or administration device and to keep an up-to-date medication list.

Follow the supplied storage instructions. Keep medicine in its original labeled container, securely away from pets and children, and separate different household members’ medicines. FDA warns that flavored products can attract pets and child-resistant packaging may not stop an animal.

Ask about the labeled beyond-use or expiration date and safe disposal. For accidental exposure or an urgent concern, contact your veterinarian or local emergency veterinary service. See Safety & Quality for reporting pathways.
